Just Say It

Lots of people have asked how my date went earlier this week.  So I’ll tell you. It went great and we both agreed on that. We said it out loud, like adults who can communicate their feelings. It went so well, in fact, that halfway through dinner, he asked me if I’d like to see him again the following night. Trying hard to not be impulsive, I suggested we talk about that later.  He asked me two more times that night, via text (as you can see). About 1:00 PM the following day we agreed to dinner plans, he made a reservation and confirmed the location and time.  Great! A man who can take care of things!

I scheduled the rest of my day to get everything done in time to be on time: because I am an adult and I can tell time and I can manage my time. While I was running the last of my intervals on the treadmill, he sent me a text to cancel; at 5:47 PM (73 minutes before we’re confirmed to meet). Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Ok. What are you thinking? Because I know what I am thinking. But we’re going to give him the benefit of the doubt that he’s being sincere and genuinely has a conflict. I reply kindly, he returns the message and … I never hear from him again.

Which brings me back to this. It’s ok if you don’t want to see me. It’s ok if it isn’t a match. It’s ok if you changed your mind. It’s ok if you met someone else who excites you more. It’s ok if it’s not a good time to date. It’s ok if, on second thought, you changed your mind. It’s ok, if on reflection, you realized you really didn’t like me all that much.  ALL of those things are ok. What’s not ok is not saying it. You’re not saving anyone’s feelings but slipping quietly into the digital abyss. You’re a man. You run a multi-million dollar company. You served in the military. You can do hard things. Just say it.
