Tonight is Eamon’s senior night for basketball. And while I tried to hold this night off for as long as I could, it has arrived. It’s not so much about it being his last game. It’s more about the countless hours we have spent together, raising him through sport, and watching him learn to become a man through the lessons the game has taught him. It’s the end of an era. My heat hurts thinking about how much I will miss watching him play. I don’t know which will overwhelm more tonight. My joy and pride in him, or my bewilderment that this era is ending.
My older son is coming home from university so that we can walk Eamon out together. It’s always been the three of us. But it’s only ever been me on the sideline. It’s always been on them on the court. Walking out together will feel like a breakthrough moment for us. Still together. Stepping bravely into the arena–together–we can discover what is on the other side (cue BubbaSparxxx).
