I recently arrived at the airport really late on a weeknight. I walked towards baggage claim with a gentleman from my flight. He was friendly and we
were really laughing so I stopped him (in a way that only I would with a complete stranger) and said, “Hey, I am going to ask your advice on something really personal.” I proceeded to explain to him an issue with which I was struggling. His reply was perfect:
“Do you really want to make this your Waterloo? No. No you don’t. So you are going to go and get after it. Why? Because here’s what I have learned in life; 1) Say how you feel. Don’t swallow your emotions; 2) Do it now. Don’t wait.; and, 3) Drink the good wine first. You’re worth it.”
Sometimes it takes a total stranger at the airport to illuminate the way forward with doubtless clarity. We nodded at each knowingly. We retrieved our suitcases. We departed and traveled our separate ways. I followed his advice and postponed my Waterloo for another day, another person, another cause.
Leave it to me to find the one human at the baggage carousel who would drop a casual cultural reference to Waterloo; a battle I know all about and a song by ABBA through which I have won–not one BUT TWO–lyrics contests. (That’s a photo of me winning in 2016!). Thanks to my love of military history, my parents, and the turntable we had in the dining room, I really can’t be beat.
